Submission Guidelines

Unbound welcomes submissions consistent with the platform’s justice ethos and community-building objectives. Further, submissions are not limited to any single form of expression; some may combine or suggest illustrations and contain web-links. The goal is to broaden participation and perspectives. Unbound thus publishes pieces designated for timely articles, interviews and discussion pieces and a variety of art and multimedia, including photos, videos, paintings/drawings (scanned), poetry, and music.

Process of Submission
For all submissions, please email [email protected] with the following information:

  • Name, e-mail, phone number, address, organizational and/or religious community association (if any) of the Contributor
  • The phrase “UNBOUND submission” in the subject line
  • Nature of the submission
  • Written assurance that you are the owner of all copyrights and other intellectual property rights to the material and that the material does not violate or infringe another’s rights, including, but not limited to, privacy, publicity or intellectual property, and that the material does not infringe any other copyrights, is not defamatory and is not a violation of law; and
  • A photo of yourself and a short bio to accompany the submission.

Articles:

Articles generally range from 1000 to 1500 words. However, exceptions will be made as appropriate for a given piece.

All submissions should use gender inclusive/expansive language: please note that this can mean the avoidance of gendered language altogether or the interchange of male and female language, except in cases where gender is the issue at hand. Depending on context, not all quotations from historic sources need to be edited for inclusiveness.

All submissions, including, but not limited to articles, must be the original, unpublished work of the author(s). They must not have been submitted for consideration by another academic or practical journal, unless the author has secured all permissions to republish the article in Unbound. The contributor must be the sole owner of all copyrights and intellectual property rights to the material submitted or have the written permission of the co-author or co-creator of the material.

All submissions should conform to copyright laws and not reproduce unoriginal material without explicit citation and, where necessary, permission to use the material. Contributors are responsible for obtaining (and paying for) copyright permission as necessary; documentation of copyright permission should be submitted with the manuscript.

Op. Ed Submissions:
Same conditions as articles, however, submissions should be between 400-600 words.

Photos and Art:
We invite a diverse range of original art media which lift up issues of social justice and faith: photographs, drawings, paintings, digital art, etc. Please review our upcoming journal issue themes and our site content to see if Unbound might be a good home for your art. Unbound encourages its artists to think outside of the box and to express themselves creatively, in ways not possible in the traditional format of a written article. Unbound welcomes art that is grounded in your personal experiences, hopes, and frustrations. Unbound’s primary considerations of art submissions are: originality; relevance to the journal’s mission and/or issue themes; appropriateness for a faith-based platform with viewers of a wide variety of ages; and whether the art offers a critique of society, church, unjust social mores and/or political policies.

In addition, all photographs must be accompanied by a signed release of any individuals who are depicted in the photograph(s). In the event the individual depicted is under the age of 18, the release must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.

To submit your photo or art, email images at not less than 1024×800 pixels, but preferably higher (2240×1680). Photos should be submitted in JPG, PNG, or GIF formats only, not RAW or Adobe formats. Scanned images should be the highest possible resolution. Please note that we can only make basic color and contrast corrections for final print, and as such, all images should be “print-ready” without text overlays, watermarks, copyright notices, or borders. Any images too small for good visibility or not meeting the above criteria will not be considered. All art must be in digital form. If you have a painting, drawing or other non-digital art, please scan or otherwise digitally convert your work before submitting. Unbound accepts only electronic submissions.

Artists should be willing to respond to questions from Internet viewers of their art.

Poetry and Creative Writing:

Manuscripts should be submitted for consideration by email in accordance with the Process of Submission requirements. The poetry should be attached to the email in Microsoft Word format. You are welcome to submit a written explanation and/or multimedia to accompany your creative writing, such as a photograph or video.
