HIDUP SEORANG IMIGRAN
Sebuah Refleksi dari Yesaya 11:1-9
11:1 Suatu tunas akan keluar dari tunggul Isai, dan taruk yang akan tumbuh dari pangkalnya akan berbuah. 11:2 Roh TUHAN akan ada padanya, roh hikmat dan pengertian, roh nasihat dan keperkasaan, roh pengenalan dan takut akan TUHAN; 11:3 ya, kesenangannya ialah takut akan TUHAN. Ia tidak akan menghakimi dengan sekilas pandang saja atau menjatuhkan keputusan menurut kata orang. 11:4 Tetapi ia akan menghakimi orang-orang lemah dengan keadilan, dan akan menjatuhkan keputusan terhadap orang-orang yang tertindas di negeri dengan kejujuran; ia akan menghajar bumi dengan perkataannya seperti dengan tongkat, dan dengan nafas mulutnya ia akan membunuh orang fasik. 11:5 Ia tidak akan menyimpang dari kebenaran dan kesetiaan seperti ikat pinggang tetap terikat pada pinggang. 11:6 Serigala akan tinggal bersama domba dan macan tutul akan berbaring di samping kambing. Anak lembu dan anak singa akan makan rumput bersama-sama, dan seorang anak kecil akan menggiringnya. 11:7 Lembu dan beruang akan sama-sama makan rumput dan anaknya akan sama-sama berbaring, sedang singa akan makan jerami seperti lembu. 11:8 Anak yang menyusu akan bermain-main dekat liang ular tedung dan anak yang cerai susu akan mengulurkan tangannya ke sarang ular beludak. 11:9 Tidak ada yang akan berbuat jahat atau yang berlaku busuk di seluruh gunung-Ku yang kudus, sebab seluruh bumi penuh dengan pengenalan akan TUHAN, seperti air laut yang menutupi dasarnya.
Saudara saudaraku kekasih Kristus,
Bagi seorang imigran, datang, tinggal dan bekerja di Amerika adalah impian. Mereka mengatakan ini adalah tanah impian semua orang. Seperti gambaran taman Eden, dimana orang orang yang tinggal disini bisa survive, bekerja dan menikmati hasil pekerjaannya, bisa study, memiliki insurance untuk kesehatan, mendapatkan perlindungan hukum, diberi kebebasan mengemukakan pendapat, pendek kata ada gambaran damai sejahtera yang diimpikan orang.
Bagi sebagian imigran yang masuk Amerika, gambaran seperti ini memang menjadi realita bagi mereka yang sudah memiliki status legal tapi mungkin tidak bagi yang belum mendapatkannya, atau yang tidak sama sekali. Hal ini menjadi pergumulan sangat berat yang harus dihadapi karena konsekwensinya harus pulang ke negara asal, sedangkan banyak dari mereka sudah hidup lama ditanah ini, berjuang hidup di sini, mereka memiliki anak anak yang sudah lahir, dibesarkan dan bersekolah dalam budaya dan tradisi bangsa Amerika. Mereka tidak memiliki tempat di negara asalnya dan mereka tidak lagi mengenal tempat asal mereka, mereka bermigrasi, seperti kaum diaspora yang terus berjalan mencari peluang dan kesempatan hidup lebih baik. Hal lain lagi yang sering diperhadapkan pada kaum imigran yaitu sebutan kaum imigran dapat dibedakan dengan warna kulit, warna rambut, postur tubuh, cara berbicara dengan dialek berbeda dari penduduk Amerika pada umumnya. Karena perbedaan ini maka tidak sedikit keluhan ditempat bekerja, di public area, bahkan di dalam persekutuan bergereja sendiri masih memperlihatkan perbedaan perlakuan terhadap orang orang yang berbeda tersebut.
Pembacaan Alkitab berbicara tentang Nubuatan Nabi Yesaya tentang seorang penyelamat yang berasal dari tunggul Isai, sebutan yang biasa dikenakan pada keturunan Daud, yang digambarkan melalui kehadiran Mesias yang dipenuhi Roh hikmat, pengertian, Roh nasihat dan keperkasaan dan takut akan Tuhan. Itulah Dia yang kita imani dalam kekristenan adalah Yesus Kristus sang Juruselamat kita. “ Jesus that we follow was a refugee and an immigrant. Two thousand years later, with refugee crises going on all around the world, we must remember that the very existence of Jesus calls us to see the presence of God in all people. We must see those who immigrate and flee and seek refuge across borders as images of God, no more and no less than any other person.” (Linsay Popper, 2017) Apa yang digambarkan pembacaan ini bahwa Mesias atau Yesus tidak melakukan penghakiman dengan sekilas pandang saja, mengingatkan kita tentang karya penyelamatan yang berlaku bagi siapa saja tanpa pandang bulu, dengan kehadiranNya ditengah semua perbedaan Ia menghapuskan cara cara penghakiman menurut hikmat manusia yang terbatas, tetapi penghakiman yang dimaksudkan menurut cara Allah artinya dituntun oleh Roh hikmat, pengertian, Roh Nasihat dan keperkasaan, dan takut akan Tuhan yang selalu adil dan benar menurut kekayaan kasih karuniaNya; kehadiranNya juga menyatukan segala perbedaan: ras, suku, bangsa dan bahasa, yang membuat keterpisahan sejak awal dunia diciptakan, Ia menciptakan perbedaan perbedaan itu sendiri dengan maksud saling melengkapi, menjadi kekayaan kasih karunia Allah, tetapi juga saling membantu dalam kekurangan pengertian dan memenuhinya dalam kebersamaan penuh cinta kasih seperti digambarkan Nabi Yesaya tentang Serigala akan tinggal bersama Domba; Macan Tutul berbaring disamping Kambing; Anak Lembu dan Anak Singa akan makan rumput bersama sama; Anak menyusui bermain main di dekat liang ular tedung, pendek kata mereka yang tidak bisa akur atau tidak bisa hidup rukun karena perbedaan dan saling bermusuhan, justru digambarkan bisa hidup bersama dengan rukun dan damai.
Dimasa Adven ini adalah suatu berita anugerah bagi para imigran, para refugees dan semua orang yang sedang merasakan keterpisahan, permusuhan, penderitaan, terluka, yang kehilangan orang orang yang mereka kasihi karena berbagai varian virus covid-19, juga bagi mereka yang sedang menderita karena ketidakadilan, bahwa Yesus sang Mesias ada dalam semua wajah ini, Ia mengajak semua orang untuk melakukan keadilan, bergerak untuk menyatukan keterpisahan dan permusuhan, membantu mereka yang sakit, menderita kehilangan dan terluka.
Bahkan bagi semua kaum imigran, atau para refugees sendiri, melihat semua perbedaan, pergumulan dan penderitaan, dimasa Adven ini ajakan “berbuah bagi Allah” artinya mari menjadi orang yang bergerak dan bertindak memajukan ekonomi bangsa yang signifikan dengan menjaga keamanan dan kesejahteraan hidup bersama. Para imigran yang datang study dan bekerja tentu saja menjadi pemberi sumbangan terbesar atas kemajuan ekonomi bangsa ini. Saya menyaksikan tentang keuletan mereka bekerja di perusahaan perusahaan, tanpa kenal lelah, mereka bekerja secara luar biasa, begitupun yang mendirikan business pribadi, mereka berupaya maksimal untuk membantu kebutuhan masyarakat Amerika. Mereka yang datang study dan bekerja, mereka memiliki prestasi prestasi yang luar biasa dibidangnya yang sangat membantu perekonomian bangsa. Memang disadari ada juga imigran yang tidak patuh pada hukum negara dengan kasus kasus criminal tertentu, tetapi proses hukum dan keadilan juga tetap berlaku atas mereka. Mereka diajarkan patuh dan setia pada hukum yang adil sehingga kejahatan tidak berlangsung secara terus menerus. Sehingga tidak ada orang yang berlaku fasik di gunungKu yang kudus, artinya hukum yang adil dan benar meningkatkan kesadaran berbuat benar dan adil menurut kehendak Tuhan bukan kehendak manusia.
Di antara semua persoalan yang dihadapi kaum imigran, sebagai umat Allah, kita juga harus dengan penuh kesadaran menolak setiap bentuk rasisme yang dialami kaum minoritas sebab hal ini akan sangat menganggu stabilitas bangsa. Sebab Yesus dalam wajah kesatuan mengajarkan kita untuk mengasihi sesama kita seperti diri sendiri. Tidak ada orang yang menyakiti diri sendiri selain merawatnya. Dunia yang kita tinggali ini akan hancur karena tidak memahami apa yang Yesus ajarkan tentang mengasihi Tuhan Allah dan sesama. Yang akan menjadi penyebabnya adalah pengenalan akan Allah. “Semakin besar pengenalan akan Allah, semakin besar kecenderungan pada kedamaian. Dengan demikian mereka akan hidup di dalam kasih, sebab seluruh bumi penuh dengan pengenalan akan TUHAN, yang akan memadamkan panasnya amarah dan permusuhan antarmanusia. Semakin baik kita mengenal Allah yang pengasih, semakin kita akan diubah ke dalam gambar yang sama, dan semakin kita baik terhadap semua orang yang menyandang gambar-Nya. Bumi akan penuh dengan pengenalan akan Allah seperti lautan penuh dengan air – begitu luas dan lebar pengenalan ini, begitu jauh ia akan menyebar – begitu dalam dan sampai pada intinya pengetahuan ini, dan begitu lama ia akan berlangsung.” (Matthew Henry, Article) Dan, kalau dulu hanya di Yehuda Allah dikenal, sekarang semua akan mengenal Dia (Ibr. 8:11). Pengenalan akan Allah itu akan memunculkan kesadaran akan kebenaran yang hakiki bahwa setiap kali kita melihat orang orang kecil, lemah, tidak berdaya, pendatang yang disebut orang asing meminta perlindungan, bahwa kita sedang melakukannya untuk Yesus Kristus itu sendiri. Yesus ada dalam wajah orang orang yang membutuhkan.

LIFE OF AN IMMIGRANT
A Reflection on Isaiah 11:1-9
11:1 A shoot will come out of Jesse’s stump, and a shoot that will grow from its base will bear fruit. 11:2 The Spirit of the LORD will be upon him, a spirit of wisdom and understanding, a spirit of counsel and might, a spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD; 11:3 Yes, his delight is in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge with a glance or make decisions according to people’s words. 11:4 But he will judge the weak with justice, and will judge the oppressed in the land with honesty; he will strike the earth with his words as with a rod, and with the breath of his mouth he will slay the wicked. 11:5 He will not stray from righteousness and faithfulness as a belt is tied around the waist. 11:6 The wolf will live with the sheep, and the leopard will lie down with the goats. The calf and lion cub will eat grass together, and a small child will herd it. 11:7 The ox and the bear will eat grass together, their cubs will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. 11:8 The suckling child will play in the burrows of the rattlesnake, and the divorced child will stretch out his hand to the viper’s den. 11:9 No one will do evil or misbehave in all my holy mountain, for the whole earth is filled with the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters of the sea cover its foundation.
My dear brethren of Christ,
For an immigrant, coming, living and working in America is a dream. They say this is everyone’s dream land. Like the picture of the garden of Eden, where people who live here can survive, work and enjoy the results of their work, can study, have insurance for health, get legal protection, are given the freedom to express opinions. In short there is a picture of peace that people dream of.
For some immigrants who enter America, this picture is indeed a reality for those who already have legal status but maybe not for those who have not, or who don’t at all. This is a very difficult struggle that must be faced because of the consequences of having to return to their home country, while many of them have lived a long time in this land. Struggling to live here, they have children who have been born, raised and educated in the culture and traditions of the American nation. They have no place in their home country and they no longer know their place of origin, they migrate, like the diaspora who are constantly looking for opportunities and better life opportunities. Another thing that is often faced by immigrants is that the term immigrants can be distinguished by skin color, hair color, body posture, how to speak in a different dialect from the American population in general. Because of this difference, many complaints in the workplace, in the public area, even within the church community itself still show differences in treatment of these different people.
The Bible reading speaks of the Prophet Isaiah’s prophecy about a savior who came from the stump of Jesse, the title commonly applied to the descendants of David, who was described by the presence of the Messiah who was filled with the Spirit of wisdom, understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might and the fear of God. That’s what we believe in Christianity is that Jesus Christ is our Savior. “The Jesus that we follow was a refugee and an immigrant. Two thousand years later, with the refugee crises going on all around the world, we must remember that the very existence of Jesus calls us to see the presence of God in all people. We must see those who immigrate and flee and seek refuge across borders as images of God, no more and no less than any other person.” (Linsay Popper, 2017)
What this reading illustrates is that the Messiah or Jesus did not make judgments at a glance, reminding us of the work of salvation that applies to everyone indiscriminately, with His presence in the midst of all differences He abolishes the ways of judgment according to human wisdom which is limited, but judgment that is intended according to God’s way means being guided by the Spirit of wisdom, understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, and fearing the Lord who is always just and righteous according to the riches of His grace. His presence also unites all differences: race, ethnicity, nation and language, which have made separation from the very beginning of the world. He created the differences themselves with the intention of complementing each other, becoming a wealth of God’s grace, but also helping each other in lack of understanding and fulfilling them in togetherness, full of love as the prophet Isaiah describes the Wolf will live with the Lamb; The Leopard lay beside the Goat; The calf and lion cub will eat grass together; Breastfeeding children playing near the burrows of tedung snakes, in short, those who cannot get along or cannot live in harmony because of differences and mutual hostility, are actually described as being able to live together in harmony and peace.
This Advent period is a blessed news for immigrants, refugees and all those who are feeling separation, hostility, suffering, hurt, who lost their loved ones due to various variants of the covid-19 virus, also for those who are suffering because of injustice that Jesus the Messiah is in all these faces. He invites all people to do justice, moves to unite separation and enmity, helps those who are sick, suffering loss and hurt.
Even for all immigrants, or refugees themselves, seeing all the differences, struggles and sufferings, in this Advent period the invitation to “bear fruit for God” means let’s be people who move and act to advance the nation’s economy significantly by maintaining security and prosperity living together. The immigrants who come to study and work are of course the biggest contributors to the economic progress of this nation. I witnessed their tenacity in working in corporate companies. Tirelessly, they worked amazingly, as well as those who set up personal businesses, they tried their best to help the needs of the American people. Those who come to study and work, they have extraordinary achievements in their fields which greatly help the nation’s economy. It is recognized that there are also immigrants who do not comply with state law with certain criminal cases, but the legal process and justice still apply to them. They are taught to obey and be loyal to a just law so that crime does not take place continuously. So that no one acts wickedly on My holy mountain, meaning that a just and righteous law raises awareness of doing right and justice according to God’s will, not human will.
Among all the problems faced by immigrants, as God’s people, we must also consciously reject every form of racism experienced by minorities because this will greatly destabilize the nation. Because Jesus in the face of unity teaches us to love our neighbor as ourselves. No one hurts themselves more than taking care of them. The world we live in will be destroyed because we do not understand what Jesus taught about loving God and neighbor. What will be the cause is the knowledge of God. “The greater the knowledge of God, the greater the tendency towards peace. In this way they will live in love, for the whole earth is filled with the knowledge of the LORD, which will quench the heat of anger and enmity between people. The better we know a loving God, the more we will be transformed into the same image, and the kinder we will be to all who bear His image. The earth will be full of the knowledge of God as the ocean is full of water – so wide and wide is this knowledge, so far will it spread – so deep and to the very core of this knowledge, and so long will it last.” (Matthew Henry, Article) And, if God was known only in Judah, now all will know Him (Hebrews 8:11). That knowledge of God will raise awareness of the essential truth that every time we see small, weak, helpless people, so-called strangers seeking protection, that we are doing it for Jesus Christ Himself. Jesus is in the faces of people in need.
