6 Books You Should Read About Christian Nationalism

/

As America delves into a deeper abyss of right-wing ideology and authoritarianism, the Christian faith continues to be co-opted by Christian nationalists to theologize and justify hate and greed. Following Jesus demands and mandates us to call out the sin of hate and to understand the demonic forces that distort not only the Christian faith, but any religion that doesn’t subscribe to whiteness and power. Here are 6 books you should read about Christian Nationalism.

  1. The Seven Mountains Mandate: Exposing the Dangerous Plan to Christianize America and Destroy Democracy by Matthew Boedy
    • Boedy explains the ways in which Christian nationalists and different sects of white evangelicalism have instated plans to take over seven pillars of America (education, government, religion, family, business, media, entertainment). The Seven Mountains Mandate movement undergirds many right-wing political movements such as Turning Point USA. Boedy pushes American Christians to learn about these movements that co-opt the Christian faith and teachings of Jesus. Listen to the A Matter of Faitht interview with Matthew Boedy.
  2. Bring Back Your People: Ten Ways Regular Folks Can Put a Dent in White Christian Nationalism by Aaron Scott
    • Bring Back Your People is a book of practical ways everyday folk can begin to dismantle white Christian Nationalism. We often think that we have to do grand things to end huge problems; however, Scott shows us that change comes from truth telling, meeting people where they are, and understanding how White Christian Nationalism works. Listen to the A Matter of Faith interview with Aaron Scott.
  3. The Violent Take it by Force by Matthew D. Taylor
    • Taylor dives deep into Christian Nationalist movements in The Violent Take it by Force by focusing on the nuances of several movements and expanding on the influence of several charismatic leaders. He shows us how these movements continue to dismantle American democracy while forcing us all to question how religion is used to acquire power. Listen to the A Matter of Faith interview with Matthew D. Taylor.
  4. Baptizing America: How Mainline Protestants Helped Build Christian Nationalism by Brian Kaylor
    • Mainline denominations and protestant communities are not immune to the ways in which Christian Nationalism infiltrates our faith. Kaylor speaks honestly about more nuanced ways Christian Nationalism shows up in faith spaces and how the mainline church can repent and pivot to be a force of good and reclaim the faith. Listen to the A Matter of Faith interview with Brian Kaylor.
  5. Disciples of White Jesus: The Radicalization of American Boyhood by Angela Denker
    • Denker does the hard work of truth telling when it comes to the radicalization of white boys in America. Disciples of White Jesus follows the radicalization of Dylann Roof who killed 9 members of Mother Emmanuel in Charleston, SC. Through this journey, Denker expands on the ways right-wing ideologies offer people community and belonging while also being toxic, forcing follower of Jesus to question how we are welcoming and how we create community. Listen to the A Matter of Faith interview with Angela Denker.
  6. Fire in the Whole: Embracing Our Righteous Anger with White Christianity and Reclaiming Our Wholeness by Robert G. Callahan, II
    • Christian Nationalism, as well as white Christianity, is steeped in racism and continues to perpetuates hate towards people of color. Robert G. Callahan, II expands on the ways in which white Christianity has caused harm toward Black people and how Black Christians can reclaim and foster their faith in liberative ways.
